Jess Barr is a dreamy pinup Queen and a fiercely talented stylist who’s completely stolen our hearts.
When Jess asked us if we’d jump in on a pinup photo shoot showcasing her excellent retro-inspired styling skills, we jumped on the chance! Working with Jess always makes for a fun photo-shoot day and it means we get to peruse her closet for pinup looks.
Jess chose dresses by Sourpuss Clothing and sold at Distorted Utopia for this shoot because of their retro vibe and form fitting design. The accessories belong to the model – Shaleea Jennings, who surrounds herself with retro pieces at home as well. To achieve these classic pinup hair styles, Jess used products by Suavecito/Suavecita Pomade who are known for their commitment to classic car, motorcycle, tattoo, and barber cultures.
Pinup culture dates back to the 1800s and so does Route 66. The historical “Springfield Road” between Springfield and St. Louis, MO was authorized by the State of Missouri in 1837 and on November 11, 1926 US Highway 66 was born. Route 66 became an iconic part of the American family road trip and led to popular destinations like Disneyland and the Grand Canyon.
Springfield’s Best Western Route 66 Rail Haven hotel originally held eight sandstone cottages that were built just 12 years after the road was established as a main road leading through Springfield to the west coast. The hotel features classic cars parked out front and a classic telephone booth as well as a retro filling station. The hotel was generous enough to let us shoot there and pose with the cars. Thank you Rail Haven!
Our models are Nigel Kindrick Lee and Katie Thomas, both of Karma Salon and both supremely talented. If you happen to live in the Springfield area and are seeking a stylist we can’t speak highly enough about these two. Give Karma a call and book your eyelash extensions, up-styles, or cut and colors today!

“Retro culture is a place near and dear to my heart. It’s a place that I feel myself in. No judgement. Pure beauty. I feel like it is such an art. The hair, the outfits, and the decor. It all took so much skill and talent to create! A talent that I feel has been lost over the years of modernization. It also has been such an amazing platform for body acceptance and love. When you look into this culture see all shapes and sizes. All of them are absolutely beautiful. We all support each other and our versions of this retro life. We’re like a family. No matter where you are there’s a connection. That’s so powerful. Who wouldn’t want to be involved in that kind of love and acceptance?”
Thanks for hanging out with us, Jess. We can’t wait to work with you again!
