Sometimes it’s good to wear your heart on your sleeve.
We’re big fans of comfy, cozy clothes we can throw on and get going. Classic t-shirts never went out of style and thankfully they’re gaining popularity and more available than ever. The best part of fashion tees with a message? What you want to say is printed right on your shirt. We’ve compiled a list of our favorite feminist tees, the organizations behind them, and where you can get one. Enjoy!
1. Nasty Woman – Culture Flock, Springfield MO
Y’all watched the third and final presidential debate between Donald Trump and Secretary Hillary Clinton, yes? Then we don’t need to explain why this shirt is truly epic. Women all over the country have been rocking these bad boys and we’re super into it. You already know how much we love Culture Flock. These babes are all about equality, feminism, and making great things. Be the nasty women you want to see in the world.
2. Ladies is Pimps Too – LUSH at BARtique, Springfield MO
Hi. Obviously you’re familiar with Jay-Z, Queen Beyonce’s hubby. Well he wrote a little song called “Dirt Off Your Shoulder” that was the second track released on his 2003 album, The Black Album. He and Saint ‘Yonce have been dating since 2002 so it’s pretty clear who the line was written for. Our friend Erin Wheaton, who you’ll remember from our post featuring Lydia (the crazy amazing hair), is rocking the hell out of this tee and quite honestly we’re just super upset we don’t already also own one. Another fun thing about this boutique? It’s also a BAR. Yeah. You can drink while you shop. Genius.
3. A Woman’s Place – Wicked Clothes
Ok. Here are some facts. Women make up 50.8% of the United States Population. We earn almost 60% of all undergraduate degrees, 60% of all masters degrees and make up about 59% of the college educated, entry-level workforce. Pat yourselves on the back ladies. Furthermore, even though women hold 52% of all professional level jobs we are still LARGELY underrepresented in leadership positions. Women make up just 18.3% of the United States Congress. We hold only 24.2% percent of state legislature seats, only 10% are our governors, and only 12% of the mayors of America’s largest 100 cities are in fact, women. Seems a little f*@ked up doesn’t it?
According to the American Center for Progress it’s looking like it will be around 2085 before we reach parity with men in leadership roles. That’s too damn long, ladies. While you’re out there working alongside your sisters to close this gap, nab yourself a t-shirt like this one from Wicked Clothes and let the world know how you feel about it.
4. Can You Not – Drunk Girl Designs
Do you love the sweet, delicious sparkly nectar of the gods otherwise known as La Croix? Do you also super hate being catcalled as you simply try to go about your day like a normal human being? Have we found the shirt for you! Heather Perry’s Etsy shop, Drunk Girl Designs is full of feminist treasures like this shirt and other great pieces inspired and influenced by pop culture and the cleverly kitsch. She’s been featured on Huffington Post and Buzzfeed and everything in her shop is super reasonably priced. Grab a t-shirt, pair it with some bright orange cigarette pants and a pair of mint-green flats and hit the streets sister.
We can’t promise you won’t be catcalled because, hey, we live in a pretty aggressive world, but at the very least when you whip around to tell ’em what for you’ll have a message at the ready. But really though, carry mace, stay safe. We love you.
5. Let Us Now Praise Badass Women – Fabulously Feminist
You’ve met us. You understand us. You get it. We are ALL ABOUT badass women. It’s sort of our whole “thing”. Badass babes doing badass things their way. We’ve had the great pleasure of meeting some truly inspiring women and can’t wait to meet more! This shirt embodies that mindset and is also super cute too. This shirt also comes in a variety of colors and you can order it as a tote or a baby onesie! How adorable!
6. Pussy Grabs Back – Female Collective
Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past month (and maybe you have, lucky you), you’re aware of some things uttered by one truly terrifying cheeto, otherwise known as Republican Presidential Candidate Donald Trump. Not surprisingly, women everywhere dropped what they were doing and in unison just screamed “WTF” and then called each other to discuss their courses of action.
Candace Reels is the founder of Female Collective which is 100% dedicated to the empowerment, support, and celebration of women everywhere. In collaboration with journalist and Feminist Fight Club author Jessica Bennett, performer Amanda Duarte, and the artist Stella Marrs this shirt hit the scene and the people cheered. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of these shirts is going straight to RAINN – the nation’s largest anti-sexual violence organization. How’s that for badass?
7. Don’t Tell Me To Smile – Sarah Duyer
Ladies. What’s the absolute worst thing a dude can ask you? OK, a lot of things but one we particularly hate is “why aren’t you smiling?”. This is obnoxious for so many reasons but here are just a few that make the top of that list.
1. You don’t know me dude.
2. I am in no way obligated to paste a smile on my face for your enjoyment despite the fact that I’m a complex human who may have a trillion things on my mind, none of which are giving me reason to smile at this moment.
3. I might just not be a smiley lady. Resting bitch face is NOT a bad thing.
4. You don’t know me dude.
When you’re feeling like expressing this particular sentiment, slap on this adorable shirt with this fabulous bear and let the world know you’re happy on the inside. Or not. You be you babe.
8. Free The Nipple – halfstitchembroidery
Nipples are great. Women have them. Men have them. Just like ears and noses and eyeballs and weird toes and that mole you keep worrying about. Why then, does mainstream media, local government, and your judgey Aunt seem to be obsessed with nips and where and when they should be visible? Free The Nipple is a global movement that took off like wildfire after the 2012 release of a film called Free The Nipple that followed Lina Esco and a group of women in their effort to raise awareness and affect change in the areas of inequality between men and women. Particularly the sexualization of our bodies without our consent.

9. Empowered Women Empower Women – Feminist Apparel
Women who help lift one another up are the very best kind of women. We’ve included shops, vendors, boutiques, and feminist sites on this list because that’s who we want to support and empower – other badass ladies making and doing badass things that are meant to help support one another! We love body positive, inclusive, supportive movements that put a stop to pitting women against one another. It’s not a contest, it’s a community. Let’s be good to one another.
10. Riot Grrl – FreeRangeMomma
Kathleen Hannah is my favorite Riot Grrl. Her band Bikini Kill flipped the script on feminism and women in punk rock and encouraged women to be seen, be heard, be loud, take up space, and do it without being harassed. Hannah would yell “GIRLS TO THE FRONT” before she would start playing and get the women to the front of the stage where they would have to worry less about being groped or pushed or shoved. She represents a key point in history that would propel feminism forward and pave the way for future Riot Grrrls.
“I would much rather be the ‘obnoxious feminist girl’ than be complicit in my own dehumanization.” – Kathleen Hannah
We hope you like this list, babes! Have fun, go shopping, feel cute and remember that it’s not about what you wear, it’s about how you feel, what you say, how you act, and how you stand up for yourself. Girl Power!
